Wrexham’s Year of Wonder kicked off with a full day of birthday celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the Football Association of Wales’ creation on 2nd February 1876 at the Wynnstay. The new Football Museum of Wales team spent the day there, running workshops about this important chunk of history for several Wrexham schools. The FAW itself held its anniversary meeting at the Wynnstay – an event marked by the renovated commemorative plaque on the Wynnstay’s outside wall. And, at Tŷ Pawb, a packed audience was entertained by author Peter Read, blogger Georgina Gittins and Wrexham midfielder (and Honorary Druid) Lili Jones with yarns about the FAW’s history; about Welsh women’s football in particular; and about being lifelong fans of “the beautiful game”. Wrexham’s Year of Wonder is a festival running all through this coming 12 months, and bringing back to life a whole series of remarkable things which happened here 150 years ago, in 1876.
